Bacon Roses

Yeah, I started by making a snack…so I wouldn’t eat the bacon and shrimp along the way.
The night before: I readied a whole picnic basket with candles, plates, forks, salad dressing, glasses and sparkling cider.

Step 1: Bake the bacon, partially cook it, 350 oven for 15 minutes max, it ensures that the bacon is cooked ALL the way through. The initial recipe leaves the middle undercooked.

Step 2: Muffin Tins, I was instructed to drill holes into my mini tin…I couldn’t do it. It was NOT cheap and I like my muffin tin, so I improvised and used aluminum foil to create a smaller tin and drip area. It TOTALLY worked.

Step 3: Because I was also making chocolate covered strawberries for my bouquet, I wanted them to be pretty…you know without the flat chocolate side from drying, so I filled the mini tin with rice, and nestled the strawberries into them, to pose them. I drizzled the chocolate on top and they came out so nice!

Step 4: I had decided that bacon roses alone would not be sturdy enough for their pikes. I really couldn’t figure out how they were suppose to stand onto the stems once I cooked them, so I decided to improvise. I used precooked shrimp and sliced them into a nice cone shape, rolling the bacon onto the shrimp then securing it with a toothpick, which also helped to suspend the bacon in the muffin tin.

Step 5: Bake the Bacon Roses in 350 degree oven for 20-30 minutes.
I used the baking time to whip up a salad and ready my flower vase

The Vase: You can do this early, I have practice, so I just did it last minute. You need 2 or 3 fake flower bundles, I recommend the sturdiest stems you can find, even then you’ll have to reinforce some, the bacon is heavier than it seems it should be, I ended up using wire to keep the bundle closer together for the bouquet look. Pull the flower heads off of the stems carefully to expose the stem wire, which is where you’ll put the roses. I actually ended up with a peculiar little flower tip, I was able to put the end of my toothpick into it, and then slide my bacon and strawberries onto them, it was very successful.

DEFINITELY buy filler flowers or foliage, the arrangement looks bare without it. Also, use a heavy vase filler, like pebbles, or marbles to put your stems into. I used clear glass filler beads from the $1 store.

So, that’s it. I highly recommend the gesture. I surprised him at work by sneaking in and setting up a candle light lunch in his breakroom, he had no idea, it took my strong prompting of him to take a look at the roses in order for him to see what I had done, they really look just like a bouquet of flowers, thank you Pinterest.
My husband really loved it and it was not too difficult to do in a hurry.

Enjoy. L
